Primers and adapters are short oligonucleotides that serve as starting points for DNA synthesis, enabling the amplification, sequencing, and manipulation of genetic material in techniques like polymerase chain reaction (PCR and qPCR), next-generation sequencing (NGS), and molecular cloning. Primer and adapter sequences must be carefully designed and optimized to reduce off-target annealing and amplification, and any added chemical modifications must be adequately removed prior to use in downstream applications.
